This is the most common type of headache. It is most often described as a bilateral pressing or tightening feeling. The intensity ranges anywhere from mild to severe, but discomfort can last up to a week. Nausea and vomiting are not generally attributed to this type of headache, but light or sound sensitivity is common.
A migraine headache is not as prevalent as a tension headache, but it is talked about more often. Many people will attribute any severe head pain to a migraine, but this is not always the case. When a headache that lasts for up to 72 hours, with unilateral pulsating pain of moderate to severe intensity, it is referred to as a migraine. Unlike tension headaches, nausea and vomiting are a symptom of migraines, along with light and sound sensitivity. Symptoms are also often worsened by routine physical activity, which can leave the sufferer bed ridden until the migraine subsides.
A less common symptom with migraines is called an aura, affecting approximately 20% of those who suffer from migraines. Auras are neurological symptoms that take the form of visual abnormalities or other sensory problems. Sometimes auras will even happen in between migraines, but usually they happen before one.
Cluster headaches are a rare form of headache that affects only about 1% of the population. While most migraine sufferers are women, men between the ages of 20-40 are the most common cluster headache patient. A cluster headache is excruciating pain around the eyes or behind the forehead. Attacks generally last 15 minutes to three hours and can occur as many as eight times on a single day. Cluster headaches are associated with eyes tearing up, forehead sweating, and nasal congestion. During the attack, some individuals become understandably restless or irritated.
