Many in Brookfield know all too well when a severe migraine headache pops up, you are unable to focus on anything else. The pain can be so bad that many just have to lie in a silent, dark room and just wait for the pain to go away. The idea of trying to work or spend time with another person is out of the question. Even just thinking can be like torture. If this sounds familiar, know that you are not alone and there is hope. While pain medication is an option for relieving pain, they often cause nasty side effects and can be addicting, not to mention that they only offer temporary relief. Our chiropractors at the Brookfield Advanced Chiropractic and Rehab are able to treat migraines without drugs or invasive procedures.
Many people describe any severe headache as a migraine, yet a genuine migraine follows certain criteria. A migraine is less common than a tension headache, but it ranges from mild to severe on the pain intensity scale. It is also a recurrent issue that will last anywhere from 4 hours to 3 days. Generally, females are more likely to be migraine sufferers than males.
To be diagnosed as a “migraine sufferer,” one must have at least five distinct headaches that last the necessary lengths of time. The headaches must also include two or more of the following symptoms: throbbing pain, unilateral position, nausea or vomiting, visual or hearing sensitivity, and aggravation of the headache by physical activity. Some who suffer migraines, about 20%, will also see an aura before a migraine starts. While this lets the person know what is coming, it doesn’t make the pain any easier.
If this article sounds familiar to you and what you experience, consider reaching out to our chiropractic office to learn more about treatment options. Generally the first appointment will include a full assessment to determine what may be causing the migraines. Occasionally this will also require x-rays or other tests to see the full picture.
Your chiropractor will then likely perform spinal adjustments which will relieve pressure or unnecessary stress that may be causing or contributing to pain. Spinal adjustments can also help improve blood flow and decrease pain. If your chiropractor has discovered that you have food triggers that contribute to your migraine severity, he or she may recommend dietary modifications to remove those triggers. The treatment plan will also include advice on correct posture and various meditation techniques.
